Although his two older brothers were born in New York, Chayanne's parents returned to Puerto Rico prior to his birth. He was born on June 29, 1968, in Rio Piedras as Elmer Figueroa His mother gave him the nickname "Chayanne" because the 60s television series called "Cheyenne" was one of her favorites. After adding two more children to the family, they settled in San Lorenzo, a town of 20,000 in the southwest of Puerto Rico. In the church choir, his brother played accordion and his sister played guitar, while Chayanne played tambourine before adding his voice to the choir. He was only ten when he accompanied his sister Clara to a youth music audition, which led to his being selected for Los Chicos. Soon the group was touring and performing constantly, traveling with tutors to continue their schooling. When Los Chicos broke up in 1983, Chayanne knew he wanted to continue in entertainment. He appeared in some television soap operas, and in 1987 got a recording contract with Sony International Music. He developed a stage style melding song and dance. His self-titled debut album sold well in South America. His second album, also self-titled, was released by Sony in 1989 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Performance in 1989. His international appeal was reflected in the 1989 commercial for Pepsi Cola, which appeared in Spanish (no subtitles) during the 1989 Grammy Awards retransmission in the U.S. and Europe as well as Latin America. He has been featured in magazines in the U.S. as well as in Latin America. He recorded five albums with Los Chicos and nine more as a solo performer. His records have sold more than 4.5 million worldwide. Chayanne made his film debut in Puerto Rico with "Linda Sara" (Pretty Sarah). He appeared in the Mexican soap opera "Pobre Juventad" (Poor Youth) and in Puerto Rico series "Tormento" (Torment) and "Sombras del Pasado" (Shades of the Past). U.S. audiences became better acquainted with him when he appeared in the 1999 film, Dance With Me, opposite Vanessa Williams.
